What is a sponsor (by your own experience)?

I saw this nifty thread on SR tonight

To me, a sponsor is someone who tells you what to do and how to act and someone to give you advice until you drink, then they fire you.

But then I found a sponsor who works with chronic slippers like me, he worked with me through a set of steps until I was done, now I'm sponsor-free.

A sponsor is someone who points you to God That's it.
